From Nov. 27 to 29 at ECU, join culture lovers from across the region to collect unique works from the country’s most exciting emerging practitioners!

Emily Carr University of Art + Design (ECU) is thrilled to invite you to find your next treasured possession with a centennial edition of its Legendary Student Art Sale and Indigenous Winter Market.

Held on the occasion of ECU’s 100th Anniversary, the three-day event marks a century of imagination and innovation, offering a chance to take home one-of-a-kind works while supporting the next generation of artists and designers.

“I really love how visitors get to see a side of the artists that’s a bit more personal and fun,” says fourth-year 2D + Experimental Animation student Victoria Chirciu. Victoria, who also teaches painting and pottery at Bella Ceramica on the North Shore, will be selling her paintings and prints at this year’s SAS, where she will be working as a greeter.

“The sale is a really great place to discover what local artists are doing and to support us as well. The event also helps prepare us for our future careers, and because all the students are from different majors, it’s an exciting opportunity to see how creators express themselves across so many different mediums.”

For more than 50 years, the SAS has offered Vancouverites the chance to view and purchase works by the region’s most exciting emerging practitioners. More recently, the SAS has joined forces with Indigenous Winter Market, run by the Aboriginal Gathering Place at ECU, to offer an even more spectacular range of original paintings, drawings, ceramics and sculpture, as well as printmaking, photography, illustration, housewares, wearables, jewelry and more.

Second-year Visual Arts student Shelby Smith is an interdisciplinary artist currently focusing on film photography. A member of the Gitxsan Nation, Shelby also works with natural materials in traditional practices including weaving.

At this year’s Indigenous Winter Market, she will be selling photographs of natural spaces as well as prints, postcards, buttons and beaded objects.

“Before last year, I’d never taken part in anything like this market, and to make connections with people and have them interested in the things I make is really special,” she says.

“I like to see visitors get inspired when they encounter new ideas and up-and-coming artists. And the community of artists at ECU and within the AGP is also very encouraging. It’s an incredible thing to be a part of, and the market is a celebration of that community of Indigenous artists as well as Indigenous art.”

Josh Baker is an interdisciplinary artist and second-year Industrial Design student. His offerings at this year’s SAS include a small run of his popular ceramic bowls inspired by nature, including his home at the foot of Mount Seymour. He will also be selling a limited-edition print of one of his drawings.

“I’m proud of what I make, and it’s always a good feeling to have members of the public purchase my work, because it says my time is valuable and my work means something to people,” he says.

“Plus, seeing what so many young artists are making is really inspiring. For some of these students, the sale may be their first time selling their work publicly, and that’s a big thing for any artist. Buying something can make a big difference in someone’s life. I honestly wish the sale happened twice a year.”

Don’t miss out! The SAS and Indigenous Winter Market take place from Thursday, Nov. 27 through Saturday, Nov. 29 at ECU. See the SAS event listing and Indigenous Winter Market event listing for their respective hours.
